    What each color means

    • Yellow

Potentially dangerous weather: it can cause damage and disrupt everyday activities.

    • Orange

Dangerous weather: it can cause significant damage and disrupt services. Follow the instructions of the authorities.

    • Red

Exceptionally dangerous weather: it can cause serious damage. Follow the instructions of the authorities.

Besides the alerts, the SMN issues short-term warnings: weather that is already happening or will happen in the next few hours in a small area.

What to do in each case

The official recommendations from Civil Protection and the National Weather Service. In an emergency, call 911.

    Zonda wind

    • Close up the place you're in completely so the hot, dry air from outside doesn't get in.
    • Spend as little time outdoors as possible and avoid the sun and physical effort.
    • Protect your eyes and avoid breathing in the dust in the air.
    • Secure roof sheets, tiles, flower pots and anything else the wind could blow away.
    • Stay away from trees: branches can break and fall.
    • If a power line comes down, don't touch it or step on it, and notify the authorities.
    • Don't light fires or burn anything: with such dry air, a fire spreads very fast.

    Thunderstorms

    • Stay indoors: at home, in a school, a building or a vehicle.
    • Unplug electrical appliances and stay away from them.
    • Don't shelter under trees or metal structures, and stay away from wire fences and railings.
    • Get out of swimming pools, rivers and reservoirs.
    • Don't put the trash out, and keep drains and gutters clear.
    • Bring in or secure anything the wind could carry away.
    • Keep a flashlight handy.

    Hail

    • Stay inside and don't go out while the hail lasts.
    • If you're driving, slow down gradually with your low beams on, without braking hard or overtaking.
    • If you need to stop, pull completely off the road.
    • Afterwards, check roofs, pipes and windows; if there is serious damage, call the authorities.

    Snowfall

    • Avoid outdoor activities.
    • Keep a supply of food and drinking water.
    • Ventilate your home and car so carbon monoxide doesn't build up.
    • If you have to travel, make sure your vehicle is ready for ice and snow (chains included).
    • If you get stranded, stay in your vehicle: don't try to walk out of the storm.

    Extreme heat

    • Drink water often, even if you're not thirsty, and avoid drinks with caffeine or lots of sugar.
    • Avoid the sun and strenuous exercise, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
    • Eat light meals, with fruit and vegetables.
    • Keep offering children water and dress them in light, light-colored clothes.
    • Look for cool, ventilated places. If you feel dizzy, vomit or have a high fever, see a doctor.
